BusIndia, an Indian government run portal which offers online bus ticket booking, is all set to give tough competition to its private sector competitors this year by taking over 14 state-run transport companies. BusIndia, claims itself to be World’s largest bus ticketing portal, while also claiming that the web portal sells more tickets in comparison to redBus, its biggest private rival and offers bus ticket booking on around 80% of state run bus services network in the country.

Busindia.com, modeled after the government-owned train ticket reservation portal IRCTC, offers more than 90 million seats. Developed and managed by Bangalore based, Radiant Info Systems, the portal is also backed by Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) and the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU).

In 2005, the web portal started online ticketing for Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation and sold the maximum number of tickets on web in comparison to other states.

Ashish Mishra, CIRT Head of training and consultancy, said that the whole idea behind starting the online portal is to offer public an easy access to public transport and making the state transport corporation more profitable. The portal though initially did not get much affinity, but today the situation has entirely changed making BusIndia the world’s largest and the most popular online bus ticketing portal.

BusIndia at present covers 17 States including Karnataka, Punjab, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and around 50 state-run enterprises. So far the web portal has succeeded in selling more than 116 Million bus seats and claims to sell over 47,000 per day (1.4 million a month).
