Google shuts its music streaming service in India

Google Music streaming service webpage is redirecting to the Google Search page in India while other pages for the service are showing up 404 – page not found error when visited from India indicating that Google may have pulled the plug. The service met with a similar fate in China about 9 months back.

There has been no official confirmation from Google yet. We noticed that the catalog on the service was getting old and even though the service was free, there were visible cobwebs indicating that the latest redirection may be a complete closure rather than just a service outage.

The service was launched just under 3 years ago in October, 2010 and allowed to stream music on multiple devices through the Google partner network. The service was a lot different from what is being offered on services like Dhingana, Saavn and Gaana but, it seems that Google’s model didn’t hold too much of a potential in India. The closure follows that of Flipkart’s Flyte earlier this year.
