In the works since late last November, the camera module is now ready to buy through Premier Farnell/Element14 whereas RS Components will be having it on sale soon enough. The camera entered its tuning phase this February and the Raspberry Pi foundation was working on drivers at the time. According to latest announcement, the tuning of the camera module is now over and that has headed to the distributors.
Announcing the release of the camera module, the Raspberry Pi website notes: “We’ve been very grateful for your patience as we’ve tweaked and refined things; it’d have been good to get the camera board out to you last month, but we wanted your experience to be as good as possible, and we’ve been working on the software right up until last night.”
According to the specifications, the camera module has a 5MP Sensor that is capable of 1080p, 720p and 640x480p video format. Farnell has got the 5MP camera module in stock and is available for £19.87 (~$25) including VAT whereas RS Components has listed the “coming soon”. You can view the camera board setup video here.
