According to initial reports on Reddit and Google Product Forums users are getting a “SMS search has been shutdown” message when they are trying to carry out SMS search by sending out a message to 466453 in the US. Navigating to the official Google Mobile website and clicking on SMS Search yields nothing but 404 – Page not found error.

SMS search from Google has been available to millions of users in countries like US, India, Pakistan and China. The service was also available in UK, Germany and Spain. The service allowed users to send out search queries to Google in the form of SMS without paying any premium charges. SMS search proved useful for all those feature phone users who didn’t have a web enabled phone or any data pack subscriptions.

“Just looked up if bing had a similar service and I hate bing. My world is collapsing without google having all the answers. Cant live without this service Google!!!!!!!” said one user on Google Product forums.

There is an update from a Google employee Jessica S. on Google Product forums as below:

Hi everyone,

Closing products always involves tough choices, but we do think very hard about each decision and its implications for our users. Streamlining our services enables us to focus on creating beautiful technology that will improve people’s lives.

Thanks,
Jess
