The Japanese consumer electronics giant has projected to ship 12-16 million consoles in 2013 but, it has still let out any information in the form of shipping instructions to its upstream supply chain indicating that the PlayStation 4 may have overshot its shipping schedule. This also indicates that Sony may have had some delays in manufacturing the required amount of gaming consoles.
Sources in the Sony’s supply chain have told DigiTimes that Sony had originally informed them that the new console will start shipping from June with mass shipments arriving in August. If this had been the case Sony could have easily shipped near 20 million units in 2013 but, sources are not optimistic about this figure any more.
Gaming console are already facing declined adoption rates because of mobile gaming devices such as smartphones and tablets. According to statistics the overall sales of gaming consoles has dropped by over 40% over the period of 4 years – from 55 million units in 2008 to just 34 million units in 2012.
