According to Mozilla the new browser engine is representative of attempts to rebuild a web browser from scratch by “addressing the causes of security vulnerabilities” while being able to utilize the current modern day hardware for a richer web experience. Mozilla developed safe systems language Rust is used to write Servo.

Mozilla has been developing the Rust programming language for several years now. The programming language has LLVM as its backend and has syntax similar to that of C and C++. Mozilla has dubbed Rust as a “safe, concurrent, practical language.”

The Gecko engine which is being used by Mozilla for its Firefox browser and other projects has been around for quite a few years and is showing its age against newer engines like the WebKit. Mozilla is looking to make use of Rust in more and more projects and use Servo engine in years to come.

Servo is being developed in an open environment and the code is available on GitHub.
