According to reports on Arab News daily a spokesman for the Interior Ministry of Saudi Arabia said that social networking sites like Twitter were being used to spread social unrest within the country. The Grand Mufti, Saudi Arabia’s top cleric labeled Twitter users as “clowns” who are engaging in frivolous and harmful discussions and that they were wasting their time.
Adding user identification to Twitter doesn’t mean that the information about users will be available to other users of the site but, it would necessarily mean that the Government will be able to monitor the tweets being posted by users.
There is no clear indication as to how the government will be able to restrict Saudis from posting onto Twitter. Just last week the government of the oil producing country asked telecom providers within the country to look at ways through which they can monitor or block voice over IP services like Skype.
