Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 Falls at Pwn2Own, Takes Surface Pro Down With It

The winning exploit was rewarded with $100,000 and the end result was quite impressive, since the hacker managed to bypass all the anti exploit technologies used by Microsoft on its latest operating system and web browser.

The winners were researchers from the French firm Vupen Security and their technique consisted of multiple attacks. The company tweeted, “We’ve pwned MS Surface Pro with two IE10 zero-days to achieve a full Windows 8 compromise with sandbox bypass,”

Not only Microsoft got “pwned”, Chrome, Firefox and Oracle’s Java were also compromised, proving that even Google’s defenses were vulnerable to some extend, despite the huge amounts invested in developing an “impenetrable” web browser.

In related hacking competition news, Google’s Chrome OS remained undefeated at Pwnium3 despite the deadline being extended as requested by researchers.
