Up until now Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync was the only option available to iOS users for synching contacts. Google had been using IMAP and CalDAV for email and calendar respectively. “For many years, we’ve supported two open protocols for accessing Gmail and Calendar from mobile apps and devices: IMAP for email and CalDAV for calendar”, Google noted. “Starting today, we’re adding CardDAV – an open protocol for contacts – to that list” the search engine giant added.
With CardDAV in the picture, the long standing rumour that Google is considering to phase out ActiveSync may just turn out to be true. This might not happen anytime soon but, Google still recommends using CardDAV “to sync your Google contacts with your Apple iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch).”
