Ban on Bulk SMS Lifted by Government of India

The Indian Government had gone ahead with the ban because it believed that SMS-es of threatening nature were being sent to students who belonged to North-East in cities like Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. The move was to more or less check rumour mongering and stop escalation of panic.

People from north east India started fleeing to their native place from cities like Pune and Bangalore because of the spread of rumours by miscreants.

The government also went about blocking some 20 twitter accounts at the ISP level in a bid to stop rumours from spreading. This ban invited wrath of Internet users and specially those of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. There is no news in regards to whether the government has lifted the ban on these Twitter accounts or not.
