Nokia Announces In-Location Alliance for Location-based Indoor Services and Solutions

In a press release, Nokia has revealed the names of the companies that are part of this alliance. In-Location has as its members some major companies like Broadcom, Nomadic Solutions, Samsung Electronics, Sony Mobile and Qualcomm alongside other smaller players. Surprisingly neither Apple nor Motorola are part of this alliance. Apple’s current war with Samsung may be one of the reasons behind Cupertino’s absence. Google’s absence may be attributed to its own work in this direction, to some extent,  through its Google Maps, Business Photos program.

Nokia has said that the focus area of the alliance would be to create solutions that would offer location-based indoor services with high accuracy, low power consumption and high usability. “The aim of the In-Location Alliance is to act as a pioneer opening up new business streams for indoor environments” said the alliance in its press release.

“The Alliance will focus on creating solutions offering high accuracy, low power consumption, mobility, implementability and usability” read the press release.

The alliance will be working with some common technologies in use today and found in almost all mobile devices – Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi. “The primary solutions will be based on enhanced Bluetooth 4.0 low-energy technology and Wi-Fi standards using relevant existing or coming features of those technologies” the PR reads further.

Alliance members have been asked to conduct their own pilot programs and present the data before the alliance.
