Google to Shed 4000 Motorola Jobs, Close 30 per cent Offices

In a SEC filing, Google has said that these are the first steps through which it will reinvent Motorola enabling it to expand beyond just a company known for its online search and Android operating system.

The NewYork Times notes that this particular restructuring drive will provide to be a “referendum on the management of Larry Page”. It is understood that Google went about with Motorola’s acquisition for the portfolio of 17,000+ patents that the Razr maker holds. These patents will enable Google to defend itself to a great extent from the forces working against Android.

Beyond the job cuts, Google is also looking to close down as many as 30% of Motorola’s offices worldwide. The closure will lead to scaling down of Motorola’s presence in Asia and India. The trimmed down Motorola Mobility will be focusing on limited range of devices and will be working towards releasing a few high quality handsets each year. Google has also said that it will be dropping some suppliers in the process as well.
