Steve Wozniak Predicts Trouble as Cloud Computing Takes Hold

While speaking to the audience of “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs” in Washington Wozniak said that the era of shifting away from hard drives and dumping everything on remote servers is going to be horrendous. “I really worry about everything going to the cloud,” said Wozniak notes AFP.

“I think it’s going to be horrendous. I think there are going to be a lot of horrible problems in the next five years.” he added.

Wozniak came out strong on ownership of data and moving data onto the cloud. According to the engineering wizard, data is not under one’s ownership as soon as it enters the cloud. “With the cloud, you don’t own anything” and that users have already “signed it away”.

Along with ownership comes the question of control of data. People can claim ownership and control of the data that resides on the physical hard disk of their computer. But, as soon as they start sharing data by offloading it onto the cloud, they lose the control.

“A lot of people feel, ‘Oh, everything is really on my computer,’ but I say the more we transfer everything onto the web, onto the cloud, the less we’re going to have control over it.” he said.
