The service tweeted at around 6 pm EST, “One million people have signed up for a new, modern email experience at Outlook.com.”
Dubbed as a Hotmail.com replacement, Microsoft had just released a preview of the service at noon yesterday. Users will be getting the chance to get their email address ending with Microsoft’s famous email client, Outlook. Users with email addresses ending with @hotmail, @live or @msn can keep their existing names and upgrade to the new client.
Microsoft is looking to compete with Gmail and in the process has upped the ante by offering social media integration with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. It is also believed that Skype will also be integrated within the mail client.
Some of the other features are Contacts, Calendar along with Microsoft’s cloud storage option – SkyDrive. The new service will also provide users with options to have direct Inbox access to documents from applications of Microsoft Office suite i.e. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Windows 8 maker is targeting to make Outlook.com different, more socially integrated while being optimized for handheld devices.
