The $2.5 million pledge has doubled the amount that was available to the supporters of the campaign. According to a spokesperson for Washington United for Marriage (WUM), there has been no larger donation compared to what has been received from the Amazon founder. “We think that it’s the largest ever,” said the spokesperson.
Supporters of the campaign have said that this particular donation is more or less a game-changing gift which will give them a fighting chance later in the year. “The extraordinary contribution from Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos will make an enormous difference for our campaign to defend Washington’s marriage law,” said Zach Silk, WUM’s campaign manager.
The other supports of the campaign include the likes of Microsoft, Nike and Starbucks notes the Guardian. Earlier in July Bill Gates along with Steve Ballmer had pledged $100,000 each in support of the campaign.
Bezos has denied to be interviewed on this matter and declined all requests through a public relations representative.
